To define what they call the next domestic vehicle designers at Nissan did a lot of research. They summarized the results in a concept vehicle, a minivan called the Forum. But the shape of that vehicle may say as much about what the designers discovered about the American home and family as about the future of the auto.
It is a truism that for decades now the automobile has functioned as much as common space for the American family as the living room or kitchen. But in the Forum, the spaces are divided like warzones between parents in the front and kids in back. The frustrated father/driver has the option of overriding all electronics, audio and video, with his “voice of God” microphone. The name Forum means a place for exchanging goods and ideas, but in ancient Rome it was a place of treachery and intrigue.
